Media Day

A Citizen Arts Media Day is an intensive but fun whole day event in which up to 30 participants can work together in small groups to:
- Identify and explore and local issues that matter to them
- Learn how to articulate these issues through a variety of media
- Create a piece of recorded or print media to forward (or present to) decision makers.
If required, Citizen Arts UK can also facilitate a Question Time event, utilising our trademark interactive voting technology, in which the resulting media is presented to a public audience and the issues then discussed with decision makers. Contact us for more details.
How does it work?
After some basic introductory work and icebreakers the participants take part in a Backchat Workshop to identify the themes and issues the group would like to work on. The group is then split into six teams each of which is assigned one of our facilitator-producers to help them create and record their piece of media.
What would I need to do?
We’ll do all of the work on the day. All the organisers need to do in advance is:
- Invite the participants (and obtain media release forms if using Photostory option)
- Provide a venue with three suitable spaces (one of which must have an internet connection)
- Provide refreshments.
What does the day include?
- A Backchat Workshop session. In this one hour mini-consultation the participants will explore and identify local issues they would like to see addressed by decision makers. Furthermore, the groups will explore who their possible target audiences will be and how to design their piece of media accordingly.
- Splitting into groups the participants will then create one of the following:
- Media Poem: A montage of catalogue still images, music, silhouette and recorded voiceover. Output as a video file.
- Photostory: Using original digital photos and speech bubbles to create a comic book narrative. Output as printed media.
- Political Song: Using one of our selection of pre-recorded backing tracks the participants write original lyrics and record a song to express their views. Output as mp3 or CD.
- A showback session.
- Every participant can take away an edit of their piece of media on the day, however, within a week of the workshop we will forward polished edits of all the pieces in a variety of suitable digital formats.
