Day Packages
(Sep - Nov 2009)

Local Democracy Days

Each package is a full day of democracy activities for groups of 30-120 people which gives them the opportunity to:

  • Find out how democracy works in different institutions
  • Meet and discuss local issues with councillors and decision makers
  • Participate in a youth consultation exercise
  • Take part in a hypothetical planning role-play

How does it work

When the participants arrive they are split into four groups and then take part in a series of activities in rotation. These vary from package to package but generally include a performance, an electronic voting workshop, some sort of mini-consultation and an opportunity to interact with political representatives.

What would I need to do?

We'll do all the work on the day. All the organisers need to do in advance is:
  • Invite the participants
  • Provide a venue with three suitable spaces
  • Provide refreshments
  • Ensure a minimum number of councillors attend - (exact number depends on size of event)

If this sounds like a lot to do, don't worry. We have extensive experience of running these events and can help you plan your day.

Choose from:
Local Democracy Day I, Local Democracy Day II or Youth Select Committee Day

Local Democracy Day I

Includes:

  1. A performance: either Who Runs This Place? or The Rights Stuff!
  2. What to do with the Wasteground? This interactive workshops picks up on one of the issues from the play and, using our trademark electronic audience voting system, allows the participants the opportunity to take on the role of a councillor and engage in a difficult planning decision.
  3. Backchat: A one hour mini consultation on a local issue of your choice, designed and led by one of our experienced facilitators. Previous topics have included: local transport, youth provision, anti-social behaviour and opportunities for participation. A chance to get a taste of what young people really think.
  4. Political Speed Dating - A fun and light hearted way for the participants to interact with their local Councillors. Like conventional Speed Dating each session consists of a series of 3 minute 'Dates' (or interactions). Proceedings are overseen by our infamous virtual host Mr 'Big' D. Mocracy and his real life assistant Marjory.
